The Big Green Egg® is designed for longevity and requires minimal maintenance. However, a few key steps will ensure your Egg continues to perform at its best for years to come. These simple checks are especially useful as part of your Spring cleaning routine to get ready for grilling season.
1. Check the Hardware
- Inspect the bands and wheeled nest hardware annually for tightness. Avoid overtightening; the goal is simply to ensure the hardware is secure, not overly tight.
- If you frequently move your Egg, double-check the wheel assembly to ensure it remains secure.
2. Remove Ashes
- Fully remove ashes from the Egg by first removing the internal fire ring and firebox.
- Sweep the interior and clear out all ash.
- Before replacing the components, inspect them for any signs of wear or damage.
- When reinstalling, make sure the firebox’s opening (the “mouth”) aligns with the draft door, and place the fire grate with the beveled side facing down.
3. Inspect the Gaskets
- The gasket plays a crucial role in regulating airflow, start-up efficiency, and temperature control.
- Check the gasket for any burns or missing sections. A damaged gasket can affect the Egg’s performance.
- If you notice significant wear or degradation, a replacement can be ordered to restore optimal performance.
