Pretty Isn’t Enough: The Truth About Outdoor Furniture That Doesn’t Last

We know the story. You spot a stunning outdoor set online or in a big-name showroom. It’s styled to perfection. The price tag promises quality. You imagine long summer evenings with friends and chilled drinks…

But here’s the reality: that gorgeous, expensive furniture? It might not make it past Labor Day.

Before we owned Backyard Living, we (Patrick and Beth) made the same mistake. We purchased a beautiful deep seating and dining set from a well-known national brand — the kind of name you’d recognize instantly. The look was flawless. The price was premium. And yet… it didn’t even last one full season.

The finish chipped. The paint bubbled and peeled. The frames warped. Cushions became stained and saggy. By the end of summer, our “luxury” set looked more like a regret than a retreat.

And we’re not alone. Customers walk into our showroom every week with the same story. These sets may look high-end, but many are made with low-grade materials and interior finishes that simply can’t handle life outside. And more often than not, they’re sold without a meaningful warranty.

Common Issues We Hear About:

  • Warping and splitting from thin, low-grade wood

  • Cracking or rusting of aluminum frames from poor-quality coatings

  • Paint chipping and bubbling within months

  • Cushion fading, mildew, or flattening from low-cost foam and fabrics

What to Look for When Buying Outdoor Furniture:

  • Grade A Indonesian Teak
This is the gold standard for outdoor hardwood — naturally weather-resistant, dense, and beautiful. Anything less (Grade B or plantation teak) won’t last nearly as long.

  • Multi-year warranties
Quality manufacturers stand by their products. If the warranty on the frame or finish is vague or short, it’s not built to last.

  • Solution-dyed acrylic fabrics (like Sunbrella®)
These fabrics are made to resist fading, mold, and moisture. If you don’t see this mentioned by name — it’s probably not what you want.

  • Marine-grade metals & UV-stable finishes
Look for materials that were designed to live outdoors — not just styled for a catalog photo.

  • Clear care and performance info
A good retailer will explain how the furniture will perform over time and how to care for it. If they can’t — that’s your sign.
